The Beginning

with 12 comments

If you haven’t heard by now, me and DJ Frow. Back aka Mr. ILoveSundaes are embarking on some kind of a trip to Asia – a trip of MEGA proportions if you will. Our first stop is Taiwan which happens to be the birthplace of me, bubble tea and Chien-Ming Wang (two of which are beloved by the people of Taiwan) who unfortunately is sidelined with a sprained right foot. Hopefully, he’ll return to help the Yankees clinch the division by the time we get back to the States.

So, we have arrived safe and sound after a surprisingly-not-so-terrible 17-hour flight. I’ll post more on our trip here later including a run-in with a celebrity. Today, we’ll be hitting up the city of Taipei to run some errands and walk around like tourists. We don’t really have much of an itinerary for this trip partly because we just want to wing it as we go but mostly because we were just too lazy. This is where the interactive portion of the blog comes in. If you have been to Asia or know anyone that has, please help us answer the following question in the comments section of this post.

In the cities of Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo, where are some great:

  • places to eat?
  • places to checkout and visit?
  • places to to demonstrate our incredible basketball skills?

Anyway, we thank you in advance for your participation. Along with this trip, this post also marks the beginning of another endeavor – my attempt in joining the blogosphere. Writing is definitely not my forte by any stretch. In fact, I suck. So yeah help a brother out. Comments, suggestions…or grammar tips are all welcomed.

That’s all for now. Hopefully, this won’t be the last post.

  2. where are you staying in Korea? do you have anyone to show you around? If you don’t have someone to show you around and you dont have any korean food vocabulary…i know you and andy are just going to hit up mcdonalds and kfc and mr. pizza and the like which is a shame because korean food is mad good and cheap there. There is a korean chain called ‘kimbop heaven’. It’ll look like this ‘김밮천국’ usually against an orange backdrop and you can get almost any korean dish for $5- $6. Their dumplings and kimbop is cheaper at $3…

Dunkin donuts and hagan dazs and other cafe/dessert places are a lot better in seoul than here in the U.S.

    places to visit:
go to coex mall at samsung stop; you’ll feel comfy w/ all the foreigners there =)
myungdong (shopping, tons of international shops),
city hall (you can walk to the chun-geh-chung river and see traditional palaces)
    jongno (bars, restaurants shops)
    hongdeh (collegiate town)
    kangnam (bars restaurants shops)

make sure you know more japanese when in tokyo – they dont speak as much english as they do in seoul. I found that just knowing ‘excuse me!’ ‘how much is this?’ and where is ____?’ got me around fine; along with pointing at the items in the menu
(sumimasen! ikura deska?, ____ doko deska?)

  4. Hope you guys have a great trip. As for recommendations on places to eat – you must try the McDonalds in Taipei. They make Big Macs to die for.

  10. I can just imagine two ABC guys walking the streets of Taipei and going “where should we go next??”..”um..i dunno, I’m not from here either!!”..hahaha. Anyways, glad you two got there safely. Here’s some suggestions for TPE:

Places to eat – I would really suggest night market food, after all, that’s what TW’s known for. If you want a “famous” place that you must go eat at, then it’s 鼎泰豊 “Din Tai Fon.” It’s one of those must go places for celebrities and tourists when they visit TW. They are most well known for their soup dumpings “shai long bao.” I would avoid going there on wknds though, the lines can get insanely long.

Places to check out & visit – Xinyi District is the prime “hangout spot” for ppl our age, there’s Taipei 101, NY NY, Shing Kwong shopping center, Eslite Bookstore, and Warner Village Cinemas (Hwa Na). Especially Warner village cinema area, if you go during this time, you’d probably bump into a whole bunch of other ABCs there. Other more “tourist” places to visit would be Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hal, Shilin Night Market, National Palace Museum, & Yangmingshan National Park.

Places to play ball – A lot of ppl play ball around “Shida”. I think most games are just played at school’s outdoor bball courts. The thing with TW is they play more 3 on 3, and they have 6 point system. As in the game ends after 6 pts, which allows for more teams to have a chance to play. You can just show up, shoot around and form teams there.

Lastly, if you take the subway in Taipei, remember you CAN NOT eat food or drink, if you have a drink with you, you need to tie the plastic bag up, if you walk in with a drink with a straw in it, you can get FINED!!
